Town meeting features hate video and ousted army vet
Stonewall Cleveland will hold another Gay Town Hall Meeting on Monday, June 21, to educate the community on the tactics being used by the religious right and military opponents. The last meeting, on April 5, attracted an overflow crowd of 140, encouraging the gay political activist group to repeat the format during Gay Pride month.
As before, the right-wing sponsored antigay video, The Gay Agenda, will be shown. This documentary-style video includes the most outrageous scenes from California gay pride parades and demonstrations, interspersed with shots of unsupervised children. Unsubstantiated "experts" describe the fringe sexual practices, constant sexual encounters and potential salvation of gay men.
The "response" video produced by a coalition of gay groups, Hate, Lies and Videotape, will also be shown at the meeting. This compares the right-wing video with the methods used by other propaganda machines, notably the Nazis.
In addition, this meeting will feature speaker Chris Boadt, Columbus-based regional board member of the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Veterans of America, which participates in the coalition Campaign for Military Service..
Boadt was a counterintelligence special agent for the Army with a Top Secret security clearance. He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal and received other commendations during his military career. After telling superiors in December 1990 that he was gay, Boadt was arrested and interrogated. Prior to his disclosure, Boadt had not hidden his orientation and it was common knowledge, among his coworkers. He was honorably discharged in February 1991 and currently serves as the meeting coordinator at the Ohio ContinuOtr
ing Legal Education Institute.
The meeting will be held June 21 in Room UC-1, in the University Center at Cleveland State University, 2121 Euclid Ave., starting at 7 pm. Call 281-9205 for more information.
Zuniga demoted
before discharge
San Francisco-A highly decorated sergeant who came out at the March on Washington was demoted to specialist just three days after the military approved his honorable discharge.
Army officials said Jose Zuniga was demoted May 13 because he wore a medal he had been recommended for, but which had not yet been formally approved. Zuniga wore a Meritorious Service medal at a Washington D.C. reception the night before the March.
Zuniga said he was sure the award had been approved, and that he had called the personnel office at his base, where somebody told him the commendation had been posted in his record. Now, he said, fellow officers are signing statements saying that conversation never occurred.
"I came out because I didn't want to live a lie," Zuniga said. “It doesn't make sense for me to lie about something as basic as one ribbon. I have five Army Commendation Medals. Why would I add one more and put myself through this horror?
"I love the Army and I hope (the reason for this) is not the reason that is resonating my mind that the Army would like to see me leave with a bloody nose."
